Aggressive Bittersweet Druggy. Energetic Happy Hypnotic. Romantic Sad Sentimental. The highlights are many, they were in top form and hadn't discovered "concept" and "guest" albums yet. This is music of sublime beauty that repays repeated listening, give it a go, if you can find a copy! Why it has been allowed to drop out of print defies sense, whoever has the rights, get off your whatever and make it available again. As far as I'm concerned it's the only Chieftains album you need other than the Barry Lyndon soundtrack.
Wow - it's no wonder this is considered their "breakout" album. Pure celtic magic. Their "Water from the Well" is the only other album that can compare for pure Irish roots. I bought this on vinyl the year it came out and I still have it but this conversion to CD captures it and it's joy to have it on my iPod classic.
I agree with the first reviewer. I think that "The Chieftains 5" was the apex of their performance of traditional Irish music. And I would rank "The Cheiftains 4" as their penultimate performance.
I haven't cared for the more commercial cooperations with other artists. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I first bought this on vinyl in its year of release just after I finished at university. I subsequently bought a number of other Chieftains albums, but still reckon that this one presents the best mix of great Celtic music. Having recently re-discovered the vinyl, I thought it time to buy the CD mainly for the car!
One person found this helpful. The Chieftains 5 came out when I was a teenager and developing a lifelong interest in folk music well ALL music actually. I bought the LP and loved it. Saw the Chieftains play some of this at Glastonbury - fab u lous. Still have LP but bought the CD to widen my listening choices. The music is as good as ever but for the price I thought the lack of sleeve notes was disappointing.
Having looked for some time for a good Chieftains album, I have not been disappointed!
This is the real stuff, the very best of the group's early albums and the best representation of the Chieftains' original sound. If anything, the group is more confident the second time out, and the material, consisting of traditional airs, jigs, and polkas, is stronger than on the first album.
