Once again the female vocal performance steals the show. The pace of the song is very good. Like all the masterpieces this album goes full circle with a masterpiece as well. The song is perfect. It is a shame that this album remains in the dark these days. I think that the destiny of true artists like Jim Steinman and others is to become cult artists which is better than to be everywhere.
This album is a gem. First things first: Amazon has the wrong date on their page for the release of this CD.
It is , not Which makes this even more amazing: it sounds so fresh and current twenty years on. Of course these song have shown up elsewhere, but for the true fan of Steinman, they must be heard how he hears them, and this is the place. The history has been well covered by other reviewers, but I wanted to throw in my two cents. The four vocalists are outstanding, with a tremendous grasp of Steinman's goal of producing operatic rock and roll.
There seems to be a loose story line here concerning the search for experience, sex, and sin, though my guess is there was more to it at one time that never quite made it to the CD. The centerpiece of the album is clearly "It's all coming back to me now", with a knockout vocal.
The other productions, however, are equally engaging. For the covers, of which there are two, I think that "Twentieth Century Fox" works well. But the ending three songs are simply stellar, with the album concluding with a version of "The future aint what it used to be" that is just amazing. The spoken pieces on the disc are interesting, with "The want ad" quite funny.
All in all this is a must have. As with some of my other reviewed music, I would not wait long to get this, as it may well disappear, as it apparently has before. One person found this helpful. Original Sin is a must for any fan of Steinman's music, because it contains tracks that we've heard covered, but whose originals rock harder.
I can't believe I just wrote that, but it's true. If you're a fan of Jim's musical Tanz der Vampire not the Crawford-infected Broadway version this also gives insight into the genesis of that show. The title track is now my favorite Steinman song, and my theme as I search for a dissertation topic. It is THE reason to own this recording. I think they mellowed by the time Meat sang them. And last but not least, I worship Roy Bittan on piano, from his work on Steinman albums alone.
