The record has some intense improvising and well recorded - but you have to be keen! Report abuse. Legendary album. It features both group and solo work within the context of a single release. On the solo disc, the emphasis is on his guitar playing and on Indian organ improvisation. In his liner notes for Sanfona, Geraldo Carneiro characterizes Gismonti's offering as "a trip through Brazilian rhythms, musical forms and popular festivals Today Gismonti strives to bring two influences together, Western Europe music and the music from Brazil.

His rhythms, also extremely delicate and carefully constructed, never suffer from a lack of pulsating energy.

The next album to present Gismonti was a trio recording entitled Magico with bassist Charlie Haden and saxophonist Jan Garbarek, recorded in See all reviews. Unlimited One-Day Delivery and more. He was also attracted to Ravel's style of orchestration and chord voicings. One of the most staggeringly, hauntingly beautiful recordings ever made on this planet, "Danca Das Cabecas" made a huge splash when it was released on the great ECM label in When Chris Albertson, the jazz critic for Stereo Review, first heard it, he offered, "I must have played this album about twenty times since I received it, with a few extra plays for side one, which hasn't yet ceased to dazzle me.

Gismonti is not only an incredible guitarist the first half and final section prove that , but he is a magnificent pianist as well. Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos provides excellent support to Gismonti on "Danca", and even contributes a piece, "Fe Cega Faca Amolada", near the end of the recording. This was Gismonti's debut on ECM records and he performs on 8-string guitar, piano, wood flutes, and vocals, while Vasconcelos is flawless on percussion, berimbau, corpo, and vocals, as well.

Gismonti is just AMAZING on guitar and handles the 8-string with a surgeon's precision, along with dazzling runs that extract a wide-ranging scope of emotions. What a fantastic artist and composer Gismonti is! It's a desert island disc for eternity. Egberto Gismonti is one of the most talented jazz musicians around. His flute-playing is pretty impressive on side one; his guitar work, also on side one, is simply staggering. But when you turned the LP over and heard his fantastic piano, you cannot help but be amazed.

I know nothing about the technicalities of playing keyboards, but if someone had told me it was Keith Jarrett or Lyle Mays playing, I would have believed them. This is one of those LPs that I bought when it first came out, back in , and have re-purchased on CD.

As soon as you start playing the album, you feel like you've let the Amazonian jungle into your room. Vasconcelos can conjure up an entire rainforest with his percussive background effects. Gismonti spent a period in the Brazilian jungle working with Indian musicians in order to gather material for this album, and it shows I should add that Gismonti is a classically trained musician -- he had studied in Paris.

This album is quite unlike any other in my collection. It is definitely not from the Windham Hill or Narada stables. Difficult in parts, it's magical everywhere. Gismonti has been amazingly prolific in making many great albums from early 70's up to mid 90's. Typically, his music is somewhat "rough" but very powerfull, emotive, rich, risky and bold during all the 70's. Learn more about Amazon Prime. Get free delivery with Amazon Prime. Back to top. Between those tracks Gismonti eight-string guitar and Vasconcelos percussion take an exhilarating musical journey where both musicians keep pushing each other to new heights.

The passion, energy, and full, rich sound of Side A make for absorbing listening. On Side B things slow down at first, with Gismonti's mostly introspective solo piano performances taking the record in a different direction. Later, when Vasconcelos again joins Gismonti, it's like two friends reuniting. Quarto Mundo, part 1 2. Danca das Cabecas 3. Aguas Luminosas 4. Celebracao De Nupcias 5. Porta Encantada 6. Egberto Gismonti’s Dança das Cabeças (recorded ) was the first ECM disc from the brilliant Brazilian guitarist and pianist and the first document of Egberto’s collaboration with percussionist Nana Vasconcelos.
