Verified Purchase. This is my favorite album by PH. It's very strange in the sense that it has a very "attempt to be commercial" sound to it, yet feels quite alone and disconnected from the mainstream of life.
I imagine it is quite unappreciated by the majority of PH fans not to mention the general public who are trying to relive the old "VDGG" days. The atmosphere has quite a haunting feel to it, but still remains somehow friendly. The tones sounds that are used are great. This album is full of interesting rhythms and parts without being too "out there" for non musicians.
I listen to it as if it were made today rather than 20 years ago , that makes it more of a special experience. This is a work of Art. Grey Melcher. One person found this helpful. I've had this LP in some format or other since it came out 23 years ago. Many PH fans don't like Skin because it is pop-song based, but the songs and the playing in my opinion are very strong.

The drumming is by Guy Evans, although I did the drum programming; Jaxon also makes a couple of appearances, getting through a variety of sax styles in the course of them.
And there's a rarer bird: Hugh Banton has contributed some flying fingerwork. On the compilation 'The Calm Before the Storm ' he explained more about its meaning: 'One of many Actor songs which have littered my path. What does happen to those lives that tread the boards? What's the trade-off? There are several onion skin layers of reality here and some of them are obviously self-referential It is still distinctly Hammill's own work, and features some typical, and timeless, Hammill ballads such as 'After the Show', and the almost obligatory longer piece, 'Now Lover', featuring a number of 'movements' and some of the most perverse time signatures since 'Pioneers Over C'.
Me, I'm plumping for the newer styles; the beautiful, translucent 'Shell', the taut, resonant title track and the rolling, shuffling funk of 'Perfect Date'. When I bought it when it was released I felt a bit disappointed about this album. Not because it was a bad album, it just didn't seem up to the high standards of its predecessors.
Now, nearly 20 years later, my opinion has changed. In fact I think this album is just as brilliant as the three before it, but in a different way. And of course the long piece of this album, the masterly Now Lover.
But Skin and Shell are also great songs. Recommanded to anyone who doesn't now his work yet, but take your time, this has to grow on you Skin is an album about art and it approaches various art forms from different angles.
With its great instrumental mix that includes violin, cello and didgeridoo, the sound is always full and engaging. The title track is a tuneful rock number whilst After The Show is a gentle ballad with an evocative vignette about the lives of actors. I told him that I only had a budget for an indies album. He told me he was mostly doing work for major labels now, but that he was interested.
I had heard some of the albums he recorded, but he knew nothing about me. I had seen them play recently, and they were great.
So David Lord rang up someome, and then asked if I would like to have Annie Haslam from Renaissance on my album, because the promoter who was working with Steeleye Span was also working with Annie Haslam. Now, I had always worked on music with poetry recitation because reciting poetry and telling stories were what I originally liked doing.
I wanted to have someone recite a poem from the Carmina Burana in Latin. David Lord said that he would like to phone up Peter Hammill to do the job, if it was okay with me.
Are you sure he would interested? David said that Peter Hammill did a lot of poetry reading. That Peter studied the real anthentic Latin prononciation, which is closer to Italian. And that he was sure he would be interested. David Lord was by then getting quite enthusiastic about bringing in people in, and seeing what would happen. Should we call him up? Go for the lot. He would also also stay up until late at night like 3 AM on his own, working on slight adjustments on the mix until it was just right.
So it was getting to be a nice atmosphere. The performances were perfect for the songs. I was quite astonished at what was going on. Both the speed and the professionalism were amazing. Both Dave Mattacks and Maddy Prior mentioned working on my album on program notes some years after this.
I was 25 at the time. Peter Hammill drove me to his house, and he played me some tracks he was working on. He showed me his Lute. I recorded an interview with him, which I later published. The engineer and everyone else would be just sitting there waiting for me to tell them what to do.
I learned a lot from working on this album. The next year in , my work with Peter Hammill went further. They rang up all the musicians who played on this CD. The entire album was recorded in a week.
Peter brought some wine to the studio and helped me record the recitation parts. It was a great CD. It had a little bit of everything.PETER HAMMILL pH 7 ( US track vinyl LP on the white mad hatter label, picture sleeve with lyric inner.
