Greatness And Perfection - Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth (CD, Album)

As a huge cope fan i have to say he's been poorly served by reissues, the distorted Jehovakill, the misprinted booklet for Peggy Suicide, and basic track omissions on Saint Julian such as the single mix of "Eve's Volcano" The alarm bells were ringing after the first bars of "Bandy's First Jump".

Thin brittle with no bottom end. This sounds like somebody took the 96 remaster, converted it to kbps mp3's and gave it to the mastering guy. The man in question has reputation at least in my book of being one of the worst mastering engineers i have had the displeasure to listen to. Maybe he was given bad files and did the best he could, but he has previous as mentioned above along with being the goto guy for Cherry Red reissues which are also less than stellar.

I don't really know what else to say here. There are numerous spelling errors in the booklet listing the release date as ! If you have the 96' remaster and the expanded Floored Genius 2, you have everything bar one track, the b-side version of "Pussyface", which is dubbed from vinyl and is a throwaway dance cut-up. They even manage to include the album version of "greatness" instead of the single mix on disc 2.

The last three tracks on disc 2 don't even belong here as they are songs from "Fried". What a disaster. Like Nineties-classic 'Jehovahkill' the essential three-piece make-up of the band really seems to work here. Cope was in thrall to 'Nuggets'-style psychedlia and here makes a much more natural version of what XTC did with their Dukes of Stratosphear-project. Well that's until we get to the oboe-driven joys of 'An Elegant Chaos', which has that famous verse many took the My heart's chemical incendiary's A highlight of the s and one that people should know more Though the lyrics don't make much sense to anyone unless you're Julian Cope himself they paint wonderfully chaotic pictures.

And the music! You've never heard an album quite like this. Also, my favorite stanza from this record seems to get everybody else's attention too.

Who could resist People I see just remind me of mooing like a cow in the grass And that's not to say That there's anything wrong with being a cow anyway But people are people With the added advantage of the spoken word I'm getting on fine But I feel more of a man when I get with the herd. If you enjoy a great pop song or simply enjoy the chase then this disc will provide you with satisfaction on both scores.

Cope seems to have admirers and detractors in equal number but let's not quibble about the mans talent, he is still out there attempting to produce Stonehenge from a pebble, one of rock's last great alchemists.

And I hated the fact … it's what Smithy [ Mark E. Smith ] said himself, that all the English bands act like peasants with free milk. All their belligerence went and they turned into forelock-tugging gruelheads as soon as they were around record company types". All songs written by Julian Cope , except where noted.
