Having recorded their debut EP, Spiral Scratch, in October , the band soon underwent personnel changes with founder Howard Devoto leaving before they signed to United Artists and embarked on the recording of their debut album.
So started a love affair with the music of Pete, Steve, Steve and John which still burns as brightly today. I used my pocket money and birthday money to buy the back catalogue of singles and purchase this, the only album they had out at the time.
My 13 year old ears loved it and my 50 year old ears do too, despite the near forty years that have passed in between. I always still buy Buzzcocks product, even re-releases so I was looking forward to this limited orange vinyl offering and I wasn't disappointed. Like many nowadays my life has been Spotified so although I still buy lots of vinyl I tend to stream a lot of music in the car on my travels.
Subsequently I tend to only listen to certain tracks rather than whole albums so although my Buzzcocks playlist gets a good bashing, it doesn't include everything. I stuck this beautifully pressed album onto the turntable and for the first time in quite a number of years I listened to the whole album, track after track in one sitting. I'd really forgotten how good the album is as a whole. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing.
Punk rock was still on the up when The Buzzcocks made their debut album. They had already made a major impact on the direction of music and the future 'indie' culture with their debut EP, but had also undergone significant line-up changes.
Like all their recordings, the album achieved a modest but assured chart placing, a consequence of their uncompromising attitude. So, there have been some great car rock songs, but when Pete Shelley sings, 'Fast cars are so vicious', he offers a previously untold perspective.
His 'love' songs too debunk the notion of spurned teenage love in sensitive terms. His victims are violently bitter. The second side of the LP proved to be the album's secret weapon. While the first side consists of short songs in similar format to their singles, the later songs tend to be longer and better-crafted without losing their edge.
John Maher, an exceptional drummer, dominates this track with his incessant drum patterns. I disagree with those who find fault with the production.
This is a sleek, exciting, yet razor-sharp album. The sound is spot-on. The other single was cut from a similar cloth to the album.
The Buzzcocks may not, collectively, have been great musicians, but their spirit and independence contributed to make this a classic album. Saw the buzzcocks 3 times around , great band, great album reminds me of those exciting far off days. The remastering for this release is excellent and sounds great on my HiFi, packaging is well put together being an accurate copy of the original sleeve and inserts. Report abuse. Bit difficult to be objective. Growing up in Manchester in the mid seventies the Buzzcocks were just such an important part of my life and that of my friends I can only give this five stars.
The posey, tough bands from London were okay but the Buzzcocks were ours, camp well Pete Shelly anyway , cuddly, witty, intelligent and friendly and for us epitomised what punk was all about more than any other band out there.
