After college, his singing career took off when he led and managed a number of East Coast bands including South Jersey's "Black Smoke". Then, in the mids, "Smoke", as lead singer of The Ebonys, brought new life to the sound of Philadelphia with his rugged and powerful voice- slammin' the 90s with a dose of the great hits that made The Ebonys famous. He returned to North Wales to do an encore performance in March, , less than six months after his first performance.
Donald Banks - Status Quo 12''. Davis, Paul G. Saturday, 13 July Andy's Jazz Show Great sounds once again on UK Jazz Radio. There's a fair portion of vintage Jazz Funk and the 3Play this week comes from veteran Ernest Ranglin. MFSRadio Apresenta:. It was intended as the second duets album to feature Donny Hathaway and her. Flack finished the rest of the record on her own. Mtume, R. Reviews: This was intended to be Roberta's second full fledged collaboration with Donny Hathaway but as we all know, Donny committed suicide before the recording was finished, so we'd never know what the final product might have been had the album been completed.
Nevertheless, what we eventually got from the sessions were 7 tracks featuring Donny's vocals on only 2 of them. On 2 tracks, the songs ran back to back for nearly 18 minutes long, so Atlantic must have been pretty desperate to drag out the half complete sessions into a full length album. How else to explain an interminable 9-minute plus take of "Back Together Again" when a 4 to 5 minute version would have done the job? That aside, the good news is that the quality of this, Roberta's disco album, is remarkably even.
For those who think Roberta doesn't ever let rip, just listen to the last 15 seconds before the fade out. For a fleeting moment, I thought I was hearing Aretha! Escondido, CA. Top 8. Moneymaker shaking guaranteed. Bernabe Jurado 7". Riisto 7". It's from that fine set that A-side "Riisto" is taken.
Given that the track is a deliciously fuzzy, low-slung floor-rocker - think distorted, Afro-funk influenced horns, frenetic drums and a heavy, full-throttle bassline reminiscent of some of the heaviest '60s and '70s deep funk records known to humanity - it's an inspired choice of single.
The B-side is pretty darn tasty, too. Groovier and more relaxed with decidedly psychedelic analogue synth action presumably provided by guest collaborator Jimi Tenor , "Acid Panama" is every bit as inspired as "Riisto" in its own peculiar way. Saona 7". Tunji 7". The title tune "Tunji" is a sax-led masterpiece, slow yet constantly building and morphing into something new and exciting, taking the term 'broken beat' onto a new platform.
Conversely, the B-side's "Mode For Trane" lingers at a slow tempo, transporting you into a bittersweet lullaby with Nat Birchall's sax very much in the spotlight. What a cracking little 7" - TIP! Obeah Man 7". A-side "Obeah Man" is wonderfully sweet, soulful and breezy, with Birchall and company layering jaunty spiritual jazz style piano riffs and snaking solos think Clarinet, sax, trumpet etc over a warm, loose and bustling groove.
They continue on a similar vein on the slightly bolder flipside cut "Seeking", where bandmembers trade solos atop a classic jazz style bassline and fizzing drums. That forthcoming album should be killer. Alabama 12". Thought Seeds 7". Jazzaggression Norway. While they have all done their own thing on the side, this particular album has reached cult fandom in the free-jazz category, and is still referenced by many as the 'one'.
Norway's Jazzagression have reissued it in all its glory, and have also put out a single comprised of its tow best cuts, "Thought Seeds" and "Lilith Came". The former is a moody, powerful track with a danceable bassline, while the latter fades the drums and energy into a marvelously placid wave of melodies and harmony. Get this copy for a spine-tingling rush of harmony from the late sixties.
The Perfect Circle 7". A superb work, we chose our two favorites leading with the disco-funk dancer title track introducing the band The Perfect Circle. On the flip side is the rare groove The Hands of Time, a b-boy, disco, jazz-funk floor shaker. Don't miss out on The Perfect dancer, DJs tool and one for the collectors!
Right Or Wrong Soundtrack 7". Four Flies Italy. Polk 7" 1 per customer. Within the rare groove and jazz-dance community, the group's sophomore set has long been considered a hard-to-find "must-have". Here Matasuna Records celebrates reaching a quarter-century of releases by offering up a seven-inch featuring two of the album's most celebrated cuts. A-side 'Polk' is a genuine jazz-funk delight: a storming dancefloor workout in which mazy, ever-more-intense electric piano solos ride a relaxed but floor-friendly groove.
Flipside 'Balek' is, if anything, even better, with spacey synths, sharp horn lines and fluid electric piano solos sparring over another leisurely groove. On My Way To Harlem 7". He clearly lends himself well to edit culture as proved by the huge success of the many " What?
