Well, maybe the Clancy Brothers take on "Waltzing Matilda" is equal to his I like everything on this, but the more uptempo songs are the bigger successes, simply because they are fun to sing along with, whether silly or a love song. A week or so later, it had become my favorite cut of all of them. I don't know why, it just makes me happy. There are moments when the "backing vocals" intrude on the joy of hearing Jimmie's pure voice, but that was common in pop and rock music in that era.
The record companies did not even trust such distinctly wonderful voices as Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Rosemary Clooney or Doris Day to carry many two-minute songs alone. If you want clean lyrics, clear singing, brisk accompaniment and a jolly good time, buy this before it goes out of print.
Get a used copy if you have to. Jimmie is obscure now, having been tragically injured in a police incident around and coming back a couple of years later to a music industry which had moved past his best style. My, though, how good these performances are! Jimmie Rodgers was one of the most successful artists of the late fifties; however, in any discussion of the music of that period, he remains unthought of by most until one of his songs is mentioned.
Then, there is an almost unanimous "Oh, Yeah! But the strength of this compilation lies in what follows. There is the fairly well known "Make Me a Miracle" and the whimsical "Bimbombey", both of which are usually recognized the moment they start playing. The disc includes five lesser known cuts that would make the album worth having even if none of the previously mentioned tracks were there.
Rodgers' beautiful second tenor soars with the ballads "Wonderful You" and "Child of Clay". As a bonus, there are excellent versions of "Waltzing Matilda" and "It's Over". Rhino put eighteen tracks on this disc and not one of them is out of place. Anytime you combine excellent material and an excellent voice you get a remarkable product.

I always loved it when my mother played his album, and over the years it stayed with me until I, too, decided I would listen to his music and bought this outstanding CD. Jimmie Rodgers always thought of himself primarily as a folk singer, yet most of the songs he sang were country flavored pop tunes because that was where the market was.
His lilting, mellow voice was able to cross over easily to another genre of music, making him one of the most popular entertainers of the time. Unfortunately, in late , his career was derailed by an off-duty policeman in California who stopped him, ostensibly for driving erratically. What happened next was never made clear.
According to the police version, Duffy then called for assistance from two other officers, and the three of them put the unconscious Rodgers into his car and left the scene. County District Attorney rejected these claims, although the three officers were given two-week suspensions for improper procedures in handling the case, particularly their leaving the injured Rodgers alone in his car. He was later found by a worried friend. All of Rodgers' most successful singles had been released by Roulette, who were notorious for not paying their artists for their record sales.
Recovery from his injuries caused an approximately year-long period in which Rodgers ceased to perform. Meanwhile, his voice was still being heard: several of his earlier hits were used in jingles in the s, one for Spaghetti-Ohs and another for a Honeycomb breakfast cereal.
During the summer of , he made a brief return to network television with a summer variety show  on ABC which later bought the rights to Rodgers' Dot Records releases, now owned by Universal Music Group. It was not until the early s when he began doing some limited live appearances again.
